Strands OF Flax edition by Gregory Raewyn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Great book, compelling characters & story, couldn't put it down. Brilliant New Author get reading now. Mystery, relationships, N.Z history all combined
Strands of Flax is a historical fiction based on actual events. It starts in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1869, a time when settlers were flocking to New Zealand to buy cheap land and leave the rigid tenancy farming systems and overcrowding that existed in Britain. In general the Maori peoples had the raw end of the land deals and there was trouble, war and often an attitude among the European settlers of condescension mingled with fear of the native people. Raewyn Gregory’s book starts with a group of Maori who were imprisoned for resisting the taking of their land and it continues to weave a contrasting story of connectedness and division across the social and racial divides.
The descendants of the first character Wai, struggle with shame when they hear the vicious rumours about Wai, and the book skilfully keeps the reader in suspense until the details are explained.
Maori spirituality plays a fascinating role in this book the forest and birds, the sea and its creatures all reverenced by the Maori and to be kept in harmony. This is in contrast to the common European attitude to the land of dominion and seeing it as a resource for the taking. The flute calls the ancestors, the flax strands tying the generations together, the mythical beings seen only by some.
The book covers geographical areas of Ninety Mile Beach, Taranaki and Otago and one gets a strong sense of place in each one. This is a must read for all New Zealanders and anyone who has visited or intends to come. Whereas most New Zealanders would understand the occasional Maori term used in the book, it would be a good idea to have a short glossary of Maori-English words at hand.
Great Book. Compelling characters and story, couldn't put it down. Highly recommend buying this book. Well develpoed characters, with mystery, relationships and N.Z history combined. Full of intrigue !!!!
